Michelle Obama’s Commencement Address at Tuskegee University


Mrs. Obama’s commencement address has drawn criticism from the Far Right because she focused on the ways in which she, as First Lady, has been racially caricatured by not just her husband’s political opponents but by even the “mainstream” media. Once again, an attempt to focus much-needed attention on what should be fairly obvious and deplorable demonstrations of racism is being characterized as being “race obsessed” and as an exhibition of the “real racism” afflicting America.


MRS. OBAMA:  Thank you all.  (Applause.)  Thank you so much. (Applause.)  Let’s let our graduates rest themselves.  You’ve worked hard for those seats!  (Applause.)

Let me start by thanking President Johnson for that very gracious introduction, and for awarding me with this honorary degree from an extraordinary institution.  I am proud to have this degree–very proud.  (Applause.)  Thank you.  Thank you so much.  (Applause.)
